The story is this: When in the desert the people once again protested against Moses and against God YHWH cultivating longing for Egypt, Elohim YHWH sent burning serpents. Moses interceded on behalf of the people and YHWH Elohim said to make a serpent of brass and place it on a pole: “If anyone was bitten by a serpent and looked at the bronze serpent, he remained alive. The commentaries interpreted this verse to say that he who looked up was saved.
After the exodus, the brass serpent was kept in Israel in memory of this episode. The problem is that a few centuries later he became the object of idolatrous worship, so much so that Elohim YHWH asked King Hezekiah to tear him to pieces.
This account reminds us that the best thing - including the Bible - can be perverted to become an idol.
