At the human level, tearful emotions surely are aroused when we see the pitiful survivors of the super typhoon YOLANDA (HAIYAN) crying and begging for help, food, and water. The hearts of many people, even from all over the world were touched deeply to pity them such that they promised to help, give donations, and at least to offer and ask prayers for the victim's sake, who have no food, no water, no houses; and with the dead bodies of their relatives and neighbors just lying on the streets and everywhere! But God's reaction is very different! In the first place, it is God Himself who allowed super typhoon Yolanda to go and batter the Philippines! WHY? Only God knows; therefore, we must go to Him and know His Will and purpose for these disasters.

The problem with the way People and Nations deal with the aftermath of every major disaster or calamity is that they are doing things that are not real solutions to the Disaster just encountered.Yes, these human ways and solutions seem right, but they usually end up in death, destruction, and sufferings! This also means that another Disaster is to come, even with more strength and terror! To avoid these terrors, we must not reason out and do our own things and ideas (Prov 14:12).
- There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. (Pro 14:12 KJV)
People, especially the religious ones, have the natural tendency to pray, and to request others to pray for the sake of the disaster victims. There is nothing wrong with prayers per se; in fact, prayers are necessary. But everyone should know that NOT EVERY PRAYER IS HEARD BY GOD!
Acceptable prayers require certain quality and conditions:
- Prayers must be from our hearts (not just from our lips), and
- Prayers (and its contents) must be in accordance with the WILL OF GOD.
During and after disasters and calamities (like the case of super typhoon YOLANDA), the people's most common and easy approach is to pray and request others for prayers for the sake of the victims. But these prayers are useless because they are NOT HEARD BY GOD (Proverbs 1:28, Jeremiah 7:16)!
- Then THEY SHALL CALL UPON ME, and I WILL NOT ANSWER; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me; (Pro 1:28 MKJV)
- DO NOT PRAY FOR THESE PEOPLE. Do not offer a cry or a prayer on their behalf, and do not beg Me, FOR I WILL NOT LISTEN TO YOU. (Jer 7:16)
- BECAUSE THEY HATED KNOWLEDGE, didn't choose to fear the LORD, were not interested in my counsel, and rejected all my correction, (Pro 1:29-30)
But GOD DID NOT LISTEN; instead He sent the super typhoon YOLANDA -- the world's strongest typhoon for this year; and allowed it to knocked out the "Christian" Philippines! And in spite of the many prayers to stop Yolanda or to spare the people, GOD DID NOT LISTEN!
And just after Yolanda went out of the Philippines, God immediately developed a NEW TYPHOON (Zoraida) that also hit the country! God have done all these to show that He does not listen to the prayers of hypocritical people and nations!
THE OTHER TRADITIONAL AND INEFFECTIVE HUMAN WAYS OF HELPING THE VICTIMS
Some give or ask for donations, have concerts and other means for fund-raisings, volunteer for repacking of donations and/or answering donation pledges, etc.
Nations send their rescue teams, and also give donations in the cost of multi-millions dollars or pesos. Then, the next disaster strikes; and the same cycle of traditional means of dealing with the victims are performed. Then, the next disaster strikes again, even with more destruction, death, and sufferings. This deadly cycle must be stopped.
The truth of Proverbs 14:12 is so important such that God emphasized it by repeating it in Proverbs 16:25!
- There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. (Pro 16:25 KJV)
It is God Himself who allowed super typhoon Yolanda to go and batter the Philippines! God also sends earthquakes, tsunamis and other disasters. WHY? Only God knows. therefore, we must go to Him and know His Will and purpose for these disasters. We must not just believe and do as we think. These kind of situations are beyond human intelligence and logic. To prevent similar disasters in the future, and to survive, we must listen to God, and we must do what God requires of us!
The following are God's Words written in the Bible that explains why the disaster happens, and what the People and Nations should do to avoid the next horrifying disasters.
- Since I called out and you refused, extended my hand and no one paid attention, since you neglected all my counsel and did not accept my correction, (Pro 1:24-25)
- I, in turn, will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when terror strikes you, when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when trouble and stress overcome you. (Pro 1:26-27)
